Quarterbacks: 2021 Position Preview

Who's In

  • Ty Evans (transferred from NC State)

After sitting out the 2019 season as a redshirt then not seeing game action in 2020 at NC State, Evans elected to enter the transfer portal and committed to the Bobcats on Jan. 3, 2021.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound signal caller out of Colorado Springs, Colo., led Palmer Ridge High School to back-to-back CHSAA Class 3A state championships en route to posting a 34-5 recorder as a starter. Evans was selected as a Nike Elite 11 quarterback as a senior in additional to being named Colorado's Gatorade andUSA Today'sPlayer of the Year. He enrolled at NC State after being rated as the number one recruit in Colorado and the No. 23 pro-style quarterback across the nation byRivals.247Sportsrated Evans as the No. 2 overall recruit in Colorado and the No. 18 pro-style quarterback nationally.

Who's Back

  • Tanner Prewit (second year)
  • Brady McBride (third year)
  • Tyler Vitt (fourth year)
  • D.J. Bolger (fourth year)

Prewit, a 6-foot-1, 205-pounder out of Dripping Springs High School, sat out the 2020 season per NCAA regulations after transferring from Arizona State.

McBride, in his first season of game action following sitting out the 2019 season after transferring from Memphis, led the quarterback room by making nine appearances throughout the 12-game 2020 season. He tossed at least one touchdown in all nine games, including a career-high five in the Bobcats' win over Arkansas State. Against the Red Wolves, McBride completed 32-of-45 passes for 443 yards, while also gaining 14 yards on five rushing attempts. He finished the 2020 season as Texas State's leader in completions, attempts, completion percentage, passing yardage, touchdowns and passing yards per game.

Vitt guided Texas State to its first win of the 2020 season when he completed 14-of-21 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns in Monroe, La. He also rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on 11 attempts against the Warhawks. He performance in the Bobcats' conference-opening game came a week after throwing for a season-high 346 yards and four touchdowns against UTSA. Vitt also threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns against Appalachian State and also had a touchdown strike through the air at Georgia Southern.

Bolger, who stands 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, served as a scout team quarterback for the previous two seasons after redshirting in 2018. He's been named to the Sun Belt Conference Honor Roll and earned the 2018 Texas State Academic Achievement Award.

What To Watch For

Eyes will certainly be on Evans during training camp after arriving to San Marcos with "Elite 11" status, but 2021 will be Prewit, McBride and Vitt's second, third and fourth seasons, respectively, wearing the Texas State maroon and gold. Evans' 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame is the largest among the current Bobcat quarterbacks.

Another season under head coach Jake Spavital and offensive coordinator Jacob Peeler can only strengthen McBride and Vitt's knowledge of the game, though. McBride's performance against Arkansas State was one for the record book — literally — while no signal caller has as much game experience as Vitt.

Training Camp Information

The Bobcats are currently in the second week of a 14-day preseason training camp inside Bobcat Stadium. Coverage of Texas State's training camp can be seen at @TXSTATEFOOTBALL on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Post-practice media availability videos can be viewed at txstatebobcats.com.

Statistically Speaking

McBride's 173 pass completions and 282 pass attempts were the fifth-most, respectively, by a quarterback in the Sun Belt Conference during the 2020 season. McBride also ranked in the top five among conference signal callers in completion percentage, total offense per game and passing yards per game. He was among the top 10 in passing efficiency, longest pass, passing touchdowns, passing yards and total offense. His five touchdowns responsible for against Arkansas State on Nov. 21, 2020 were tied for the most by an individual in the conference last season.
