Apples: Use your favorite variety. Or use a combination. Gala apples are generally used for baking, but each apple creates a different flavor profile. Here are a few you try:

  • Gala Apples - these are soft, sweet, and my go-to for cooking apples. My baked apple salad is a great example of this.
  • Honey Crisp Apples - a fan favorite, sweet and crispy.
  • Fuji Apples - readily available, crisp, and sweet.
  • Cosmic Crisp Apples- a new variety of apple that is super crunchy and sweet.
  • Pink Lady Apples - tart and sweet, and crisp.
  • Granny Smith Apples- tart, crisp, and always available.
  • Golden Delicious Apples- soft, sweet, but can be hard to find.

Pantry Items: corn starch, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. These will all add to the sweet and gooey sauce.

Butter: you are going to sauté the apples until soft in butter. This adds a level of richness that is completely delicious. You can sub coconut oil for the butter if you'd like.

Bacon: the salty bite of bacon in this recipe takes it to another level. You can totally omit, but why would you want to?

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be located in the recipe card below.

How To Make Cinnamon Apples

This stovetop cinnamon apples recipe comes together so fast. Let me show you just how to make them!

Cinnamon Apples Recipe (3)
  1. Cook your bacon to your desired doneness. Drain on a paper towel. Cut into ½ inch pieces. Set aside.
  2. Peel your apples. You can do this with a vegetable peeler or you can use an apple peeler. The kitchenAid attachment is my favorite. There are many manual peelers available as well.
  3. Dice your apples. You can do this with a knife,
  4. or use an alligator chopper. I love this gadget and use it almost daily. Just put your apple slices in it and press down. So easy.

  3. Meanwhile combine water and corn starch. Whisk to combine.
  4. Once apples are soft, stir in this cornstarch slurry and cook for about 2 minutes until thickened.

Variations

Sautéing apples is really forgiving. You can add more or less of the spices, and make substitutions. Here are a few ideas:

  • Add in dried cranberries or citrus zest for a fresh twist.
  • Switch up the spices. Cardamom would be lovely.
  • Skip the cornstarch slurry. Adding in the water and cornstarch gives a little more of a sauce, which is great when serving over something like pancakes or ice cream. But if you want them as a side, you can skip this part.

How To Serve

Here are some ideas on how to serve this cinnamon apples recipe.

  • Serve as a side. There is no shame in eating this with a spoon. It really is that good!
  • Top your pancakes. This is heaven! Add a touch of maple syrup and you'll never eat pancakes another way. The same goes for French toast, German pancakes, and waffles.
  • Add to a bowl of vanilla ice cream! This is like apple pie ala mode without the crust, and it is my absolute favorite way to serve this.
  • Mix into your oatmeal - it is delicious on both hot and overnight oats.
  • Serve with pork. The sweet and spicy apples are a perfect compliment!
  • Serve with Brie and crackers. This is truly a perfect match! The creamy cheese and the sweet apples is a perfect combo.

I made this for dinner last night with the Herb Crusted Baked Pork Loin and it was Fantastic! These cinnamon apples are better than any I’ve had in a restaurant. This dish paired so well with the pork. The sweet of the apples with the savory of the pork make for the perfect bite! The one change I’ll make next time is to add more bacon and chop up the slices smaller so that every bite has some bacon in it. I highly recommend this dish!
